Hi Folks…

We all understand that hiring people is challenging. Hiring Superstars or Rockstars you’ll save time, make more money, and have less brain damage.

Here Nine Big Mistakes Employers make when hiring…

1. Hiring too quickly –hire SLOWLY and fire FAST {Within the rules}

2. Hiring on gut feel alone – people can be deceiving.

3. Accepting references from previous employers at face value – some will not be as forthcoming as you might hope – they are often concerned about legal reflux.

4. Acting on a recommendation from others can be an issue – others don’t always know your needs and requirements.

5. Relying on a blown away interview – just about anyone can put on a great performance for 60 minutes or so.

6. Putting all of your faith in personality profiling and IQ Testing – e.g., they came up really well in the test. {there are some systems that are better than others}

7. They presented the most impressive resume – $200 bucks will get just about anyone an impressive resume now – they may have the skills, but will they do what is required of them?

8. Taking on an applicant because you are under enormous pressure is dangerous, you think geez… No one else applied, I’ll give them a go and see how they perform– choosing someone based solely on their enthusiasm – the person with the most upbeat personality and energy in the interview is not always the best person for the job and the business.

9. Hiring someone because you have a lot in common with the applicant – is in NO WAY a criterion for hiring someone; this is the worst reason of them all–you are not hiring people to be friends with! {Sorry}

Most hiring decisions are based on enthusiasm, whether the employer likes the applicant. Slow the hell down, do not be too keen or desperate. They are there to get the job that is their primary thinking because they need money. They will say that they want to work for you this does not mean you should hire them. I know lots of business owners that have hired people just because that person had a pulse and it turned out poorly for them.

Adding staff, changing staff is not easy, it is a tough decision and usually very difficult, and even quite painful at times. However, the reality is that team member who is resistant to improving, training, and developing are typically not congruent for your business and will often undermine rather than reinforce, support the company mission. You could see this as an opportunity to enrich the team and an opportunity to replace them with people who are more adaptable/flexible and vastly more willing to embrace change.

Hire slow, fire fast, and be fair.
And in the words of Jim Collins
“If you can’t change your people, change your people!”

How do you know if and when you have the right people and team for you?

Well ask yourself the following:

  1.  Am I paying someone even though they are not doing their job or are they untrustworthy?
  2.  Is someone that is dragging my company’s reputation down or is giving me untold brain damage?
  3.  Am l feeling obligated to keep someone even though I probably should let them go?
  4.  Are they making the same mistakes, even after being trained and retrained?
  5.  Are they resistant to learning new things or accepting change?
  6.  Is my mind preoccupied with any of my people in a way that’s not positive?
  7.  Is there an employee that pops into my mind before bedtime or when I wake?
  8.  Would I be sad if a certain employee left me for a competitor?

The Cost of Hiring the Wrong Person:

  1.  Recruiting say: $2,000
  2.  Training Cost $10,000
  3.  Salary Cost $60,000
  4.  Bad Performance $50,000
  5.  Cost of Management $35,000
  6.  Pollution of the Team $40,000

As you can see it adds up quickly,$197,000 and these dollar amounts are not over the top!

You can pare it back or top it up, it’s still a significant amount.

According to Harvard Business Review:

Approximately Eighty {80%} percent of employee turnover is the result of bad hiring decisions…

PS. 5 Quotes On finding the Right People…

When you’re in a start-up, the first ten people will determine whether the company succeeds or not. Each is 10 percent of the company. So why wouldn’t you take as much time as necessary to find all the A players? If three were not so great, why would you want a company where 30 percent of your people are not so great? A small company depends on great people much more than a big company does.”
Steve Job

If you pick the right people and give them the opportunity to spread their wings and put compensation as a carrier behind it, you almost don’t have to manage them.
Jack Welch

As a business owner or manager, you know that hiring the wrong person is the most costly mistake you can make.
Brian Tracy

People are not your most important asset. The right people are.
Jim Collins

Passion is a great force that determines people to work even harder and allows them to surpass their potential. So, try finding people who are passionate about the role. The right employee will find a way to excel if the job is a passion of theirs.
